Odds have always made sparkling irreverent rock n roll. Their songs also carry a darkly ironic signature. This combination has earned them a place in the hearts of listeners for over three decades.

Founded in Vancouver, B.C. in 1987, Odds burst onto the recording scene in 1991 with their rambunctious, self-produced major label debut, Neopolitan. Their 1993 Gold-selling followup, Bedbugs, featured the iconic singles “It Falls Apart” and “Heterosexual Man”. Constant touring and videos in high rotation fuelled the success of 1995’s critically acclaimed, platinum-selling Good Weird Feeling. This set the stage for Nest.

Over three summer weeks in 1996 Odds were back in Vancouver’s storied Mushroom Studios recording Nest. Good Weird Feeling had yielded six radio singles so there were expectations. Nobody in the band much cared about that. Instead of looking outside themselves for the next leap forward they decided on a completely DIY approach. Production was in the hands of Nigel the Cat. This was an alias created to cover for the fact Odds were doing it all. In reality Steven Drake was at the recording console with the others lobbing constant opinions. The band shut out the world. They bickered, shouted, laughed and sang this album into existence. It was fitting that the album’s producers would later win a West Coast Music Award but engraved with the name of Craig Northey’s cat. Drummer Pat Steward had joined in the middle of recording the previous album. Nest was his first stint as a co-writer and collaborator from the get go. Thus the songs had that extra spark of newbie enthusiasm sewn in. The first single “Someone Who’s Cool” was Odds first Canadian #1 and became their most popular song to date. “Make You Mad” and “Nothing Beautiful” hit the charts as well. They didn’t do it for the reviews but those were good. Band members will tell you they want to have fun and have the music connect to others. Nest indeed connected.
