The album you are holding in your hands right now is one of those by-the-wayside albums. It all but defined my life twenty years ago, when I would listen to it during my daily commutes through the Brandywine Valley, along narrow backroads and across a creaky covered bridge far from rush-hour traffic. Chris Eaton had emailed me out of the blue about Rock Plaza Central’s 2003 album The World Was Hell to Us, which I loved but was unable to convince any editor to let me cover. A year or so later, he sent me a CD of Are We Not Horses? and explained that it was a loose concept record about six-legged mechanical horses who gain sentience only to doubt the nature of their existence. It was almost exactly the length of my commute, and it always sounded so much larger than my little Mazda Protégé and maybe even bigger than the entire state of Delaware. — Stephen Deusner, August 2026
Are We Not Horses is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is now back in print via Record Record Label.
