There is a particular quality to winter light in Northern Europe, fleeting, subdued, and transformative. On Winterglare, pianist and composer Volodja Brodsky captures that elusive atmosphere in a collection of intimate instrumental works that blur the line between composition, environment, and memory.

Recorded entirely in his home, Winterglare marks the first album Brodsky shepherded from the earliest sketches to the finished master. What began as a modest piano project gradually evolved into something far more expansive, with Wurlitzer electric piano, vibraphone, accordion, percussion, Roland tape echo, and discreet field recordings entering the music naturally as the sessions unfolded. Rather than broadening the scope for its own sake, each addition deepens the album's sense of place, preserving the texture of the moments in which it was created.

The recordings emerged during the darkest months of the year, when creative work existed alongside the rhythms of domestic life. Instead of retreating from those surroundings, Brodsky allowed them to shape the music. Household sounds, passing time, and the quiet interruptions of daily routine became part of the creative process, lending the album an understated honesty that feels lived-in rather than constructed.

Throughout Winterglare, silence is treated as an instrument in its own right. Melodies unfold patiently, resonant chords linger, and subtle environmental details remain intact, creating music that values space as much as movement. While Winterglare draws from modern classical, ambient, and minimalist traditions, it resists easy categorization.
